The Rusty Fred article reminds me of the youtube video "Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen."
The video "Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen." reminds me of Rusty Fred because it is similar in the shaming aspect. The video shows Jordan (45) reading what his angry fifth-teen year old said about him on Facebook. From calling his dad names to accusing him of sleeping with his sister. After reading the whole post and justify what was true and false, he proceeded to place his daughter's laptop on the dirt he was was standing on. After placing the laptop on the ground "This right here is my .45," he says, moving a pistol into the frame. He repeatedly took shots into the laptop giving a reason before pulling the trigger. I don't think that using the pistol to destroy the laptop was necessary, it could have been replaced with simply destroying it with his bare hands
My opinion on this way of punishment is the most ideal way punishment should be given to children. No, I don't mean go and buy a gun an start shooting everything your child take pleasure in doing. I mean compared to physical punishment such as "spanking" or "no dinner" taking away what the child like would be a valuable substitute to traditional ways of punishment.
Some other videos of Parents destroying technology:
Dad Goes Crazy Smashing Daughter's Phone With Bat For Sexting
Boy cries because mother cancels account
Mom takes away Grand Theft Auto
I think that certain types of punishment would work for different types of children. Not all children would have the same reaction the the same punishment, like some might be able to tolerate pain more than others, so they would take a spanking better. But I think going to destroy your child's item may be going a bit too far, if anything just take it away from them, and make sure they cannot get it until they learn their lesson.

ReplyDeleteThat gun video was absurd. I totally agree with you. Parents shouldn't be doing those things.

ReplyDeleteI feel like parents have the right to discipline their children the way they want to, but to publicly shame them and post video of them being punished, that is wrong. I mean, I'm not saying that parents should shoot laptops or smash phones with a baseball bat, but I'm just saying that parents can do as they please to discipline their child. We can't tell a parent to not discipline their child, but we can tell them how to or teach them that the way they are doing it is wrong and encourage them to try something else.
